What a difference a decade makes. It wasn’t that long ago that Hackney was grabbing headlines for all the wrong reasons, and often found itself on lists of worst places to live. But that’s all ancient history, you’ll now find the East London borough on any right thinking list of the best places to live in London, and even the rest of the country.

Hackney is now an area that boasts some of the finest restaurants and pubs in the capital, award winning arts programmes, beautiful green spaces and hundreds of tucked away treats from fashion boutiques to large and small markets.

In the heart of Hackney the reopening of London Fields Lido, the addition of a Picturehouse Cinema and the resurgent Hackney Empire theatre mean you’ve got exercise and culture covered. For green spaces, you’ve got London Fields the Victoria Park, which also hosts a series of amazing day festivals in the Summer.

Hackney offers a range of property, and plenty of micro neighbourhoods all with their own personalities. Chatsworth Road, Victoria Park Village, Broadway Market and the area around London Fields all have a feel of their own. The 2012 Olympics brought a lot of money to the area, which helped to renovate a lot of existing buildings. There are flats and warehouse conversions of all shapes and sizes, along with plenty of period properties. The popularity of the area means that many long standing residents are cashing in and selling up, which means that plenty of doer uppers still come to market for those looking to make their mark on the area.
