The Shaftesbury Estate is an area of small Victorian cottages built in the late 1800’s between Clapham Common and Battersea Park. Located North of Lavender Hill and Clapham Common, it sits close to the River Thames affording residents excellent views. Residents enjoy close proximity to excellent rated schools, shops and easy transport links to central London. The residential estate is quiet but nearby the happy bustle of Clapham Common and all the exciting exploits around the area.
Leisure activities include trips to the music hall Clapham Grand, a local favourite haunt and the Battersea Arts Centre. Excellent pubs can be found dotted around, as can boutiques and independent shops as well as mainstay supermarkets.
Originally, the estate was known as Pig Hill in the Middle Ages because of the number of piggeries in the area. Worry not though, there are no piggeries to be seen now with the gentrification of the estate taking place via the Huguenots in the late 17th century. Now, the sought-after estate boasts attractive Victorian and Edwardian houses which were built to improve the standard of living for the locals in the late 19th century by the Earl of Shaftesbury.
The houses in this area are uniformly distinct, with red brick foundations and slate roofs with the added symmetry created by the grid layout of the estate. Now, many of the houses are polished with modern renovations and attractive finishes.
With its smaller than average freehold houses in a prime spot of London, this area is very popular with those buyers moving up the ladder and looking for more bang for their buck.
