Gloucester Road is a street in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, which conveniently runs North to South between Kensington Palace Gardens and the Old Brompton Road. The area, named after the road of the same name, sits between Chelsea and Knightsbridge to the South and East and between South Kensington and High Street Kensington. It is a convenient patch of the Royal Borough with Hyde Park to the North and good transport links. The tube station is placed on its intersection with Cromwell Road and offers District, Circle and Piccadilly line services. The area is also well connected by London’s main roads. The station is known for its contemporary art installations and Platform for Art initiative. Properties in the area range from spacious mansion flats and pretty townhouses.

The road is steeped in social history. It was named after Maria, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh because she built a new house, Gloucester Lodge, there in 1803. The site was opposite the tube station but was demolished after the widowed duchess and her daughter Princess Sophia both died. Since the late 1800’s, it has been the implicit boundary between Kensington New Town and Old. Until the late 1960’s a lot the freeholds in this area were owned by the Campbell family, son and daughter-in-law of the Duke of Argyll.

With the Kensington Park Gardens, the V&A, The Natural History Museum and all of South Kensington’s spoils not far away, Gloucester Road is well placed. Locals enjoy evenings at the Bombay Brasserie or the many excellent pubs in the area. There are excellent schools for learners of all ages, like the London School of Painting and Drawing and the Royal College of Art.
